Robert Veitch started to look to develop his new dairy unit for approximately 240 cows in 2010. Robert visited many countries, such as the USA, Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark to inform himself about the latest ideas of modern cow housing systems.
Central in his cow shed design was the welfare and well being of the dairy cow and at the same time the need to cut labour time and costs. This has resulted in the highly automated and one of the most modern dairy units in the UK. The cows are being milked in 4 milk robots, the feed is automatically put in front of the feed fence with a self-propelled feeder system and the feed is also pushed up automatically from time to time.
Cow welfare and well being have been achieved by using the latest products and systems. Key factors that have been essential this success are; comfortable cubicle beds, the best walking surface for cows, which is a quality concrete/rubber floor (the Eco-Floor). Together with a good artificial lighting system for the dark winters and a fresh air ventilation system, Roberts cows have got the best shed that can be achieved.
